In many European cities whole districts are characterised by former industrial sites. The regeneration of those buildings and areas through artistic and cultural activities has often contributed to the revaluation of districts and cities. The project SECOND CHANCE brings together ten partners from Krakow, Leipzig, Ljubljana, Nuremberg and Venice to face the challenges of culture-led revitalisation of their former industrial areas.

This conference will deal with crucial topics for many local and regional authorities in Europe:

How can we reuse urban brownfields and integrate creative industries in order to revitalise and modernize our cities? How can we succeed in such important challenges as creating new employment and stimulating local economies within the context of the sustainable development of Europe and the Agenda 2020? And last but not least, how can cooperation between public and private partners as well as with other partners in Europe help us to achieve these objectives?

During the morning session of the conference Dr. Matjaž Uršič will talk about “The Importance of Culture in Urban Regeneration Practices”, Dr. Klaus R. Kunzmann will explain his ideas on “Creative Planning for a Slow Society” and Philippe Lukacs will explain “Why it is now a key issue for companies to have an artistic and cultural dimension”. Finally Bertram Schultze will present the results of the SECOND CHANCE project.

During the afternoon session the former Secretary-General of Culture Action Europe Ilona Kish, the Secretary-General of Trans Europe Halles Birgitta Persson and Christophe Ebermann, Project Manager and Deputy Head of the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit – Joint Technical Secretariat Central Europe Programme will talk about how to profit from European collaborations, how to make projects sustainable and present the next Central Europe funding programme.

Parallel the five industrial sites that have been revitalised within the project SECOND CHANCE will be presented.

Please mark the date in your agenda. An official invitation and the detailed programme will be sent out soon.

This event will be held in German and English language, accompanied by interpretation.

RogLab is a pilot investment for the future Rog Centre, which is unfolding within the frame of the European project Second Chance. The project is connecting five cities — Nuremberg, Leipzig, Venice, Krakow and Ljubljana — in a collaboration on transforming former industrial zones into cultural and creative spaces.

Purpose
RogLab is conceived as a production, educational and presentation space in a 30 m²‑container object. Its purpose is to develop and test contents, partnerships and working modalities that could be further developed and built in the new Rog Centre following the renovation of the former bicycle factory.

Activities
RogLab is dedicated to activities in the fields of architecture, design and contemporary art, their mutual connecting and cross-sector collaboration (economy, education, science, environment, space…) as well as international networking. The integral part of RogLab is the 3D Workshop offering technology and services for rapid prototyping, supporting creativity and stimulating professional development in the three targeted fields.

On Friday, October 12, 2012, we cordially invite you to attend the opening of the RogLab – a pilot investment for the future Rog Centre.

Opening speeches by the Vice Mayor, Prof. Janez Koželj, and Director of the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana, Blaž Persin, will be followed by an extraordinary multimedia event conceived and performed by platform Cirkulacija 2.

The event, entitled Multiple Circulation (creative socius urbis), will take the form of a unique light and sound transformation of the surroundings of the former Rog factory and RogLab on Petkovškovo Riverbank, make-shop stations for DIY electric instruments, a performance by Neven Korda and a concert by Ueber V.K. = 300.000 V.K, and lots of socializing, of course.

The project emphasises the significance of authentic creative urbanity: participation, cohabitation principles, modularity, a constant searching and a dynamic and living activity that does not settle for superficial solutions but demands results in a real, social space.

Platform Cirkulacija 2 includes different art groups and initiatives, most of them are based in the former Rog factory: Cirkulacija 2; Parallel Worlds; Artgroup RGB; Ueber V.K. = 300.000 V.K

The opening event was chosen from among nine proposals received during the public call for proposals and is thematically connected with the 23rd Biennial of Design (BIO) – Design Relations and is part of the Biennial’s accompanying programme.

‘ARSENALE BRAIN’, by TANJA HEMM

Porta Nuova Tower, Arsenale, Venice

21.09.2012 – 27.09.2012 (work in progress)

28.09.2012 – 26.10.2012 (exhibition)

The architecture, the impressive vertical structure and history of Porta Nuova Tower in Venice collaborates with the site specific sound composition ‘ARSENALE BRAIN’ that Nurembergian based artist Tanja Hemm has created for it.

‘ARSENALE BRAIN’ is a strictly acoustic piece of spatial sound art that transforms the location to its fullest expression. The Tower as an architectural building, a site, a multilayered implication and a reminiscance of majestic stillness, is the object, there are no additional visual elements in the tower.

The ‘brain’ of the Arsenale awakes in a ten minute composition. Bee sounds mirror outside and inside activity. They bounce on the flirring light patterns inside the tower’s walls and walkways that are created through the reflection and in the rhythm of the water surrounding the tower. Rhythmical and instrumental sounds in the composition pick up the movement of historical and actual outer activites on the Arsenale. Real sounds of workers and shipyard life from the outside merge with the composition, enlarging the enclosed tower space.

The collaboration of sound and location, the visitor’s sense of awareness and listening capacity, creates a platform where the visitor can experience and evolve its individual, spatial and acoustic perception. Hemm’s work enhances the underlying features of a location in a precise and respectful way while ‘the compositions seem to come from nowhere, straight out of the location’. The collaboration enhances the potential of both the Porta Nuova Tower, sound and visitor.

Tanja Hemm has since 2004 worked on about 70 locations: small, large, outdoor, indoor, historic, contemporary sites, in private and public spaces, at art fairs, sound festivals, internationally. In her spatial sound art she uses the potential of sound as an amplifier for the potential of a location, for its transformation and for an outlook about what could be. Her work is as intense as it is a light breeze, it develops from a cultural as well as a scientific stand. Hemm comes from trained and educated musical, written and spoken word background. She holds an M.A. in American Literature and Radio, has worked as a writer for radio for ten years before focusing on site specific work. Her artistic work borders sound art, performance, conceptual art and recently mobile art (where she links site specific sound with the medium of the smartphone application). Tanja Hemm has lived in the US, Australia and New Zealand and is now based close to Nuremberg. She lectures on the topics of site specific sound, spatial art, location based mobile sound, writing, listening and silence and teaches Media English and Advanced Sound Design at the Hochschule Osnabrueck.

‘ARSENALE BRAIN’ is part of the European project www.secondchanceproject.eu.

Porta Nuova Tower is situated at the North of Arsenale, near the site of the13th Architectural Biennale, Venice 2012

RogLab – the pilot project for the future Rog Centre – will be launched on October 12, 2012 at 7 p.m. on Petkovškovo riverbank in Ljubljana, in the immediate vicinity of the former Rog factory.
As the name already indicates, RogLab is a space for developing and testing contents and activities envisioned for the future Rog Centre. The focus is thus on professionals and creative people from the fields of architecture, design and visual arts, their mutual connecting and cross-sector collaboration (economy, education, science, environment, space …) both on local and international levels.

RogLab is a production, educational and presentation space. It will also include the 3D-Workshop for rapid prototyping, in which professionals and students from the three target fields, as well as the non-professional public, will have an opportunity to shape their ideas into palpable reality.

The RogLab programme will be based on collaboration with companies and NGOs as well as cultural and educational institutions. The first partners will be chosen following a public call for potential partners. RogLab is a pilot investment of the European project Second Chance for the future Rog Centre.
